Tanja Hester loves what she does and she is very good at it, but she was overworked and didn’t have time to pursue her first love, which is spending time in the beautiful mountains of Lake Tahoe, skiing with her husband. Together, they designed a life where they could work or volunteer as much as they want, and also take as much time off as they want.
Tanja really goes into all the reasons WHY a person seeks financial independence. This isn’t about the money, it’s not about being rich, or sticking it to the man. This book is about designing your ideal life. It’s about identifying what you want your day-to-day, and month-to-month, and year-to-year life to look like. She asks awesome questions, gives great examples, and is so encouraging about building your dream life.
Work Optional was one of the first financial independence books I read, and I am so glad that I did. If you’re looking for something to really drive those dreams of financial independence to the front of your mind, and keep them there, this book is perfect. She’s also the creator of Our Next Life blog, that details the planning process she and her husband went through to create their plan for their idea of freedom and financial independence.
For me, this book was an excellent audio book. I listened while doing chores and running. I often found that I chose to pause it to really reflect on some of the questions she posed and took some notes. As you get through it, she starts going into the “how” aspect, drawing back on those big goals to keep you focused, and she really does an excellent job. I hope you guys enjoy this book as much as I did!
